N8TMN Dave Laskowski has Passed Away

    Posted by dcarpenter

I just wanted to pass along that Dave Laskowski N8TMN has passed away. Dave had a stroke in April and was on the path to recovery, when Sunday night complications developed and Linda his wife rushed him back to North Kansas City Hospital. By Monday evening Dave had left us.

Dave had been an instrumental part of the Northland ARES, was our Chief Radio Officer for our Clay County Mobile Command and was key in his leadership with the NKC CERT team and will missed by all.

    Respectfully

    Dennis KA0SXY

Contact Information for MO Senator Bill Stouffer

    comments (0)
    Posted by wdothage

On the net last night, 03/15/12, I mentioned that I had contacted Senator Bill Stouffer concerning his SB717, Distracted Driving. SB717 is very vague and all encompasing. ANYTHING that distracts you from watching the road is punishable by fine. I mentioned to Senator Stouffer that in many of his weekly newsletters he has stated that we don't need new laws that are redundant to existing laws. Is this the case with this pending bill? I also asked him to consider public services provided by amatuer radio operators. I included text from ARRL and links to their site.

His reply surprised me on several counts: He replied within an hour of my message. He said there are currently no laws that cover distracted driving. He feels the existing law on careless and imprudent driving does not cover distracted driving. He also said he is aware of ham radio's contributions to Missouri. He finally said that if the bill advances to committee discussions, he will revise the wording to be much more specific, and will keep amatuer radio in consideration.

Senator Stouffer can be reaced at bstouffer@senate.mo.gov.

Starting tomorrow, (April 02) the NWS in KC and 4 other offices (Wichita, Topeka, Springfield, and St. Louis) will start using some new words if they issue a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning. In light of the horrible tornadoes of last year, they will issue 2 steps of severe thunderstorm warnings, and 3 steps of tornado warnings, based on severity. The details are here:

Northland ARES Assistance for NKC Snake Saturday, March 10, 2012

    comments (8)
    Posted by n8tmn

    Greetings

North Kansas City will be hosting their annual Snake Saturday festivities on Saturday, March 10th. As we did last year, the NKC CERT Team will be deployed as additional eyes and ears for the police department. To assist with the communications aspect of this deployment, I am requesting assistance from the Northland ARES Team to shadow our CERT members during this deployment for communications back to the NKC Incident Command.

If you can lend us a hand we will deploy from the NKC Police Department between 8:30 and 9:00 am and the deployment will last until around 2 pm. After your participation we will be feeding you lunch at the NKC Community Center as a thank you!

We could use 2-3 mobile units for this deployment and probably up to six foot units to shadow the CERT Teams. The foot units will need hand held radios and sufficient batteries for up to 5 hours. A yellow vest, ARES ball cap, clothing appropriate for the weather and good foot wear is needed for this deployment.

If you can participate in this event, please contact Dave Laskowski, N8TMN via email at n8tmn@yahoo.com.

Thank you in advance for your participation and support!

    73 de Dave, N8TMN
