Platte County Storm Spotter Training We have set a date for our 2012 spotter class. If you would mark your calendars for March 21, 2012 from 1900 to 2100. First, We at the National Weather Service want to pass on to the Amateur Radio community and our hope for a happy and safe Thanksgiving.
Skywarn Recognition Day 2011 will be this December 3 from 0000z to 2400z. We are looking for volunteers to be operators and loggers for this event. The event starts at 6 pm CDT, Friday December 2 and ends 6 PM CDT, Saturday December 3.
In the Kansas City area there are two locations where Amateur radio operators can visit the National Weather Service and participate in this special event.

Gary White, N0AOK, hosts a Digital Mode Net on the 147.015 MHz +600 kHz PL 151.4 Hz Repeater Every Friday Night at 19:30 hours local time. The net uses FM modulation and has mostly concentrated on using PSK31 and is really helpful to new Hams as well as those new to Digital (like me), however all Hams regardless of experience are more than welcome. The net is monitored for FM voice to help with questions if Hams have issues getting up and running and to monitor for emergency traffic.

Melissa Reno has been chosen as the Employee of the Month for September for the job she did planning and organizing the Clay County Investigative Squad’s 40th Anniversary dinner. Besides performing all of her regular supervisory duties, Melissa worked with Captain Jackson in the preparations, ordering decorations and helping make the event a huge success.
Congratulations Melissa!
Honorable Mention:
Detention Officer David Ramirez was named the Detention Employee of the Month for consistently performing in an outstanding manner. DO Ramirez has responded to assist Detention Booking when not on assignment, made several inmate transports and quickly volunteered to assist maintenance with flooding and clean-up issues in dayrooms.
Deputy Kevin Bennett was nominated from Field Operations for the month of September. Deputy Bennett has volunteered to take on OIC duties on numerous occasions for the last several months. Deputy Bennett continually shows good judgment and takes these additional responsibilities knowing that compensation is not increased. Law enforcement members from other agencies have stated that Deputy Bennett represents our Sheriff’s Office in an exemplary fashion when interacting with them.
We also want to recognize two of our volunteers: Tim Cott and David Laskowski for their quick response with the Mobile Incident Command Unit the evening of the helicopter crash earlier this year.

Dean A. Taylor, 52, of Holt, MO, passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at the NorthCare Hospice House. No services are planned. No flowers or contributions. Dean was born January 4, 1959, in Sharon, PA. He was a kind and giving man who loved the outdoors and hunting. An Air Force Veteran, career FAA, Ham operator, and dedicated volunteer. Dean is survived by his partner, Dawn Dawson, mother Dorothy Taylor and sister Karen Mays. Dean was a gentle giant, a kind and generous man. Due to the high temperatures forecast for Saturday we are moving the maintenance window for the Mobile Command up by two hours to run from 8 am to 12 pm. Anyone interested in helping out, or if you're just curious about the unit, you are more than welcome to come out to the Clay County Highway Department at MO Hwy 33 and 116th Street. Greetings,
We will be offering ICS-700 training at our monthly meeting in July. This months meeting will be held at the North Kansas City Community Center, located at 1999 Iron Street in North Kansas City. The training will start at 7 pm and run till 9 pm. We are planning on having computers setup in the training room so you can take the EMI test for the class right after the training.
We will be using one of the meeting rooms in the Community Center, just come in through the main doors, go straight ahead and make a left at the information desk. The meeting room will be right down the corridor.
When you have completed the test and passed, please email a copy of the EMI email you receive to: ics@kcnorthares.org. This email will be auto-forwarded to the agencies we serve as part of their record of your accomplishment.

Good Morning all...
My apologies for the blanket email but in light of the horrific severe weather season in the US and here closer to home
(Joplin/Sedalia/Reading) FOX 4 has rapidly put together a special Severe Weather Symposium to be held at Union Station (in Kansas City) on SATURDAY June 18th starting @ 9AM and lasting till about 12 or 12:30. This will be held @ the IMAX Theater (seats about 450 with some standing room possible for overflow. This seminar will cover all aspects of severe weather including spotting/chasing and also more of the human element including having an insurance representative there to talk about how a family should be sure they're covered and what pitfalls there are in insurance policies should the worst happen. Also we'll have a child psychologist there talking about how children/adults who have anxiety issues with severe weather scenarios can deal with things better.
Concerning the show/seminar here is the line-up that is pretty firm at this point.
1) An insurance representative potentially from the Joplin area. He will talk about ways to be sure everybody has their insurance coverage in order and ways to make sure that they're properly prepared should the worse hit.
2) A Child Psychologist offering adults ideas/ways to help ease their child's fear/concerns/anxiety concerning severe weather/tornadoes
3) Chris Novy, a nationally known SKYWARN trainer who will be talking about situational awareness in chasing scenarios...he is fabulous if you've never seen his presentation before!
4) Andy Bailey NWS-EAX (Thunderstorm Basics and Intro to Storm Spotting)
5) Reed Timmer (A video recap of the 2011 tornado season so far...Reed is from the Show Storm Chasers)
6) Panel Discussion concerning topics perhaps not covered in the previous talks."
The show/seminar is free but we're asking for a $5 donation that will go to Project Storm Aid which is helping the tornado victims in Joplin/Sedalia/Reading
Pass this along to whomever might be interested. It should be pretty good and the videos will be amazing I think...especially from Reed/Chris and some of the videos we'll be showing...

You may have noticed on the header of our website the 2011 ICS Training button. If you click on the button you can access the links to the various ICS courses we will be offering this year! Also, you can download a copy of the ICS forms that we will be using during deployments. The forms are under ICS Resources.
Please take a moment to review this great information and it would not be a bad idea to have a set of the ICS forms in your Go-Kit so you will have them for any deployments that we get called out for!

North Kansas City Police Dept / North Kansas City Fire / North Kansas City Emergency Management is offering the basic CERT training classes starting Friday June 17th from 6 pm till 10 pm, Saturday June 18th from 8 am till 5 pm and the wrap up class on Saturday June 25th from 8 am till 5 pm.
All classes must be attended to receive your certification and a background check is required to obtain your credentials.
This class includes basic triage / first aid, disaster preparation, light search and rescue, emergency communications, basic sheltering and a wealth of other emergency situation training!
There is no charge for this class. The class will be held at the NKC Fire Station 1 which is on Howell St. in NKC, just off of Armour down the street from the Dairy Queen / NKC City Hall / PD.
If you would like to attend or have any questions, please feel free to contact Dave Laskowski, N8TMN at dlaskowski@nkc.org or n8tmn@yahoo.com. You can also call Dave during normal business hours at 816.918.7854. I can email you an application for this class and answer any of your questions.
In light of recent events, having the CERT training is well worth the investment of your time!...The training is applicable to most any emergency situation and is a great complement to any ARES training that you already have!

As I noted on the net tonight, below is an email I received today from RSOE in Hungary regarding the tornado in Joplin...please note that they have over 5,000 registered volunteers helping out down there, that is no small feat and it shows how many people are willing to pitch in when the chips are down!....
You can go to the RSOE website, check out their english page and sign up for updates. Bear in mind that they monitor the world and even outer space object so you can get a LOT of email updates from them...either way, it's a great site to monitor when bad things are going on!..

Situation:
Officials said Thursday morning that 232 people remain missing after a tornado leveled much of this city on Sunday, killing at least 125. Andrea Spillars of the Missouri Department of Public Safety said a list of names will be released later Thursday. City Manager Mark Rohr has said that many residents who were unaccounted for probably had left town or were staying with relatives. As the community began a massive cleanup effort, volunteers from around the country continued to arrive to help. The Salvation Army and American Red Cross are here, but many regular people also are chipping in. They are cleaning debris from yards and helping with search and rescue efforts. Rohr said Wednesday that more than 5,000 volunteers have registered. Around the 1,800-acre damaged area tents are set up offering medical care, free food, clothing and even pet grooming. A local radio station announced Thursday that pocket knives, gas cans and diapers were being distributed for free.

Northland ARES will be offering ICS-100b training at our May ARES Meeting!..be advised that our next ARES meeting will be held at the North Kansas City Police Department Community Room on the first floor of the Police Department. The location of the Police Department is 2020 Howell Street, North Kansas City, MO. If you are coming from the north, take I-35 south to the North Kansas City exit / Armour Rd, keep to the right...Take Armour Rd down to the Police Station / City Hall building, it's right across the street from the Dairy Queen. Dave, N8TMN will monitor the '79 repeater for talk-in if you get lost.
We will have internet-capable computers setup for those who would like to take the FEMI / EMI test after the training, this way you can get your certificate that night...
We would suggest you check out the ICS-100b information, download a student manual and the test by clicking on the 2011 ICS Training link which is located on the top of our main website page.

The Mobile Command Team will be conducting regularly scheduled maintenance from 10 - 2 on 14 May 2011. Anyone interested in helping out, becoming part of the team or just checking out the unit is welcome to come out to the Clay County Highway Department at 116th and N 33 Hwy, about a quarter mile north of US69 going towards Kearney. Effective Friday, April 15, the SkyWarn net is moving. We are moving all SkyWarn Operations to the 146.70 - repeater. For now, this repeater has a
107.2 tone on it, but we are working on making it able to shut off tones during storm sessions. There are several advantages to this repeater for SkyWarn. One is that it has backup power available. As long as the diesel generator doesn't run out of fuel, we can power the repeater during a power outage. It also has better coverage to the southwest of the KC metro, into Miami and Lynn counties, where a lot of the weather effecting the Missouri side of the area comes from. It will also allow us to work stations in Warrensburg, which will allow their net to get better info from Pleasant Hill.

On Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 7:30 am until 2 pm the Northland ARES Team assisted NKC CERT and North Kansas City Emergency Management with amateur radio communications during their annual Snake Saturday Parade and Festival.
Northland ARES provided vehicle traffic monitoring support at two locations (out of city-wide camera view) and provided amateur radio communications for their deployed CERT Team in the Carnival and BBQ area.
Various traffic reports were requested by the Incident Commander throughout the parade from ARES members and were received in a timely manner. Several lost persons were reported in the carnival area during this deployment but were reunited with their families in a timely manner.
Overall the deployment was a success as our first live event working with NKC Police Dept. The Incident Commander recognized the value of what we were able to contribute to the management of the event and we were thanked for our efforts.
My thanks to Dennis - KA0SXY, Gary - KD0DXO, Frank - KC0YSH and Steve - KD0FUE for their excellent communications contribution for this event! Thank you again Dennis for the loan of the radio equipment for the day!
Future plans for the NKC EOC still include an amateur radio station as budgets and funding allow down the road. More information regarding this as news becomes available.

ARES AAR Improvement memo 3-9-11.doc
Operation Southern Sparks”, a multiple-county communications functional exercise, sponsored by the Missouri Department of Public Safety was conducted on January 27, 2011. There were multiple objectives for the exercise that were designed to assess the capacity, efficiency, accuracy, and availability of primary and alternate methods of communications including the need for amateur radio. The exercise was based on an earthquake scenario along the New Madrid Seismic Zone in Southeast Missouri. Over 200 people, mainly in the Central, East, & Southern part of Missouri participated in this exercise.

As many of you may have been following in the News the Major Case Squad is actively work a homicide in Clay County and they are using the training center were we usually meet. As a result we needed to find a new meeting location.
Thankfully Liberty Hospital had there auditorium available to us and has agreed to host a meeting.

Greetings fellow Northland ARES Members!
I would like to formally request your assistance for ARES help on March 12, 2011. North Kansas City will be holding their annual Snake Saturday parade and festival. This year they will be deploying their new CERT Team on various assignments and would like to have an ARES member with each team deployed to provide reliable communications back to the EOC for each team.
We will also have a 2 meter station setup at the NKC PD EOC as part of their Communications Plan for the day. I could also use a few volunteer operators for this assigment so we can rotate net operators. We will be running 2 Meter FM simplex and FRS for this assigment.
The assignment will run from 8 AM until 2 PM on Saturday, March 12, 2011. I am told that because of traffic congestion it is generally best to plan on being here in NKC for the full assignment time. If you can volunteer for 4 hours as an ARES member then you could certainly spend your after assignment time enjoying the festivities! It is my understanding that all volunteers will be provided with lunch in appreciation for your support.
ARES gear needed for this assigment would be: dress for the day's weather, a 2 meter HT and sufficient batteries for your assignment plus a yellow safety vest. Note that each CERT Team and their ARES person will have an assigned location to be at and you will be on foot.
CERT Teams will be additional eyes and ears for public safety at this deployment and ARES will be used for communicating any issues back to the EOC for resolution.

My wife Linda and I would like again to publicly thank everyone who lent us a helping hand yesterday, Feb 1st when we were off the road on 210 Highway!...we managed to get back into Liberty and found a room for the night!...today, the roads are quite passable, gratitude to all our state and county workers who braved the snow and wind to get things cleaned up for all of us!
Yesterdays adventure was yet another example of why you should always have a Go-Kit with you, appropriate for the conditions you may have to survive!..it would have been quite possible for us to have had to endure hours of cold if conditions would not have allowed any help to head our way!..I / we did have enough supplies to last 48 hours if we had to, but it would have been far better if we had never left the house......
It was great to have the Skywarn Net up and running during this weather event, we do have the collective ability to report on any kind of weather, not just tornado's!....
